Maternity Clothes: How to find them

A Personal Journey

As an expectant mother, one of the most exciting and challenging aspects of pregnancy is finding the right maternity clothes. The changes our bodies go through during this time can make it difficult to feel comfortable and confident in our regular wardrobe, as wrote it about in my last Blog. However, with the wide range of options available today, it’s easier than ever to embrace your pregnancy and maintain your personal style. In this article I’ll share my personal journey of discovering the best types of Maternity Clothes and offer some valuable insights for fellow moms-to-be.

Maternity Jeans: Comfort and Style Combined

When it comes to maternity fashion, a good pair of maternity jeans is an absolute must-have. Designed with expandable waistbands and stretchy materials, they provide the necessary support and comfort for your growing belly. Look for jeans with adjustable waistbands, as they can accommodate your changing shape throughout different stages of pregnancy. Opt for classic styles like bootcut or straight-leg, which can easily be dressed up or down for various occasions.

Maternity Dresses: Embrace Your Femininity

Maternity dresses are not only practical but also allow you to embrace your femininity during pregnancy. From flowy maxi dresses to form-fitting bodycon styles, there are endless options to suit your personal taste. Choose dresses made from soft, breathable fabrics that provide room for growth and ensure unrestricted movement. Additionally, consider empire waistlines or wrap dresses that accentuate your baby bump while offering a flattering silhouette.

Maternity Tops: Versatility and Comfort

Finding comfortable tops that accommodate your changing bustline and belly can make a huge difference in your everyday comfort. Look for tops made from stretchy fabrics that provide room for growth. Empire waist tops, loose-fitting tunics and tops with side ruching are excellent choices, as they allow ample space for your growing belly. Additionally, consider tops with discreet nursing features if you plan to breastfeed after delivery.

Maternity Leggings: Stretchy Support

Maternity leggings are a pregnancy essential that combines comfort and style. Look for leggings with a high-rise waistband that extends over your belly, providing gentle support and avoiding unnecessary pressure. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics with ample stretch to accommodate your growing bump. Pair them with tunics, oversized sweaters, or maternity dresses for a chic and comfortable look.

Maternity Bras: Supportive and Functional

Investing in supportive maternity bras is crucial for maintaining comfort and breast health throughout pregnancy and beyond. Look for bras with adjustable straps, wide bands and soft cups that adapt to your changing breast size. Seamless designs can minimise irritation, and nursing bras with discreet clasps are a practical choice for postpartum breastfeeding.

But, what about Non-Maternity Clothes for Pregnancy?

As mentioned before, sometimes could be difficult to find the right maternity clothes. While there are numerous options specifically designed for expectant mothers, considering non-maternity clothes can offer a fresh perspective and provide a wider range of choices. Personally, I never liked maternity clothes. Obviously at some point it becomes essential, like maternity trousers or breastfeeding items like t-shirts and bras (if you want to breastfeed). But perhaps, as part of the road to accepting and loving this new body, I preferred to try to keep my non-pregnancy clothing style to feel more like myself.

Maxi Dresses and Flowy Tops: Comfortable and Fashionable

Maxi dresses and flowy tops are versatile pieces that can be found in regular clothing stores. They often feature loose-fitting designs, soft fabrics, and empire waistlines, making them ideal for accommodating a growing baby bump. Look for stretchy materials such as jersey or cotton blends that offer flexibility and breathability. Pair them with belts or sashes just above your belly to add definition and showcase your beautiful shape.

Oversized Tops and Sweaters: Embracing Relaxed Style

Oversized tops and sweaters are a trendy and comfortable choice for pregnant women. Explore your own wardrobe or browse through regular clothing sections to find loose-fitting shirts or sweaters with longer lengths. These can be paired with leggings or maternity jeans to create a stylish and relaxed ensemble. Opt for fabrics like knit or cotton blends, which provide comfort and allow for natural movement.

Elastic-Waist Bottoms: Practical and Adjustable

Rather than exclusively relying on maternity jeans and pants, consider non-maternity bottoms with elastic waistbands. Look for skirts, shorts, or trousers that offer stretchy waistbands, allowing you to adjust the fit as your belly grows. Flowy skirts or palazzo pants made from lightweight fabrics are excellent choices, providing both comfort and style. Additionally, high-waisted non-maternity leggings can be worn folded down under the belly for added support and flexibility.

Button-Down Shirts and Cardigans: Adaptable and Timeless

Button-down shirts and cardigans are classic wardrobe staples that can be adapted for pregnancy. Opt for loose-fitting button-down shirts made from lightweight fabrics, such as cotton or linen, that offer room for your expanding belly. Leave a few buttons open at the bottom for a relaxed and stylish look. Layering with cardigans allows for easy adjustment and adds a touch of warmth during colder months.

Stretchy Skirts and Dresses: Effortless Style

Stretchy skirts and dresses are a versatile option that can be worn throughout pregnancy. Look for bodycon or A-line silhouettes made from stretchy materials like spandex blends or jersey fabrics. These will adapt to your changing shape while providing comfort and style. Pair them with comfortable footwear like flats or low-heeled boots for a fashionable yet practical outfit.

As I embarked on my personal journey of finding the best types of maternity clothes, I discovered that comfort, style and versatility are key factors to consider. Maternity jeans, dresses, tops, leggings and bras are essential pieces that can make a significant difference in your overall well-being during pregnancy, but if you are like me, there are non-pregnancy options to consider.

And my last tip is, look for references on Pinterest to see how to match what you have in your wardrobe with your new body. Is entertaining and very useful!

Remember to choose fabrics that are soft and breathable, prioritise adjustable features, and embrace your evolving body with confidence. With the right maternity clothes, you can look and feel your best as you embrace the incredible journey of motherhood.
