Aveeno vs Other Baby Lotions: Which One Is Really Best for Your Baby’s Skin?

1. Aveeno vs Other Baby Lotions: Which One Is Really Best for Your Baby’s Skin?

If you walk through the baby section at almost any high-street pharmacy in the UK, there are a number of brands fighting for shelf space: Aveeno, Johnson’s, Mustela, Weleda, and Cetaphil. Aveeno seems to be the one that gets the most coverage due to it being an oatmeal-based product and is known to help soothe irritation. However, “most popular” doesn’t necessarily mean “best for my baby”; the best lotion will depend on your baby’s skin type (e.g., normal, dry, or oily), whether they have eczema or another condition, and what you do/do not want included in the product.
Aveeno has been compared directly with the other lotions we get asked about the most, as we believe that making an informed decision over blindly picking something from the shelf makes sense.

What Makes Aveeno Different

The Aveeno Baby line of products uses colloidal oatmeal as its core component. Colloidal oatmeal has been shown to be beneficial for soothing dry, irritated, and sensitive skin due to its ability to create a thin protective barrier that locks in moisture while reducing inflammation. This is the reason why Aveeno is a common recommendation by health care professionals for babies that have eczema or very reactive skin.

The Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion is fragrance free (with few exceptions) and hypoallergenic. It has also been clinically tested. These two attributes help alleviate concerns many parents have regarding chemical additives.
However, where Aveeno loses ground for some parents, is in the realm of natural products. Although Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion is made from oats, it is not an organic product. Also, like all cosmetics products, Aveeno contains typical cosmetic preservative ingredients and emulsifier ingredients; this is why we are comparing these products to other products.

Aveeno vs Mustela

You can use Mustela’s Baby Lotion or Foaming Formula, which are both based in a plant extract such as Avocado Perseose (from avocados) and Sunflower Oil Distillate. Using one product line from Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns can also make it easier to keep track of what products you’re using and help limit the amount of different products that come into contact with your baby’s sensitive skin. Although neither company claims to be “all natural,” they do claim to have a slightly more all-natural approach compared to Aveeno. Both companies’ products work fine if your baby has normal healthy skin. However, if your baby has been diagnosed with eczema, then Aveeno would probably be the better choice due to their oatmeal’s soothing properties.

Aveeno vs Weleda

This comparison comes up constantly, and it’s really a case of two different philosophies. Weleda’s calendula-based products (we go into detail on this in our Weleda Baby Calendula Face Cream review) use certified natural and organic ingredients, with calendula extract as the star rather than oatmeal.

Weleda tends to be the choice for parents who prioritize organic certification and plant-derived ingredients above all else. Aveeno tends to win when a baby has diagnosed sensitivity or eczema, since colloidal oatmeal has more clinical backing specifically for irritated skin than calendula does. We compare the “natural vs clinical” question in much more depth in our guide to natural vs synthetic baby skincare.

Aveeno vs Johnson’s Baby

Aveeno’s oatmeal formulas test better than Johnson’s for babies with sensitive skin. However, if your baby has never had skin problems and you’re just trying to find a good, inexpensive, everyday lotion, there is nothing wrong with using Johnson’s. But if you’ve seen redness, dryness, or other symptoms after using Johnson’s on your baby, then it may be well worth the slightly higher cost of Aveeno.

So, Which Should You Choose?

  •         Baby has eczema or very dry, reactive skin: Aveeno’s colloidal oatmeal formula is the strongest evidence-backed option.
  •         You want an organic, plant-based routine: Weleda Calendula is the better fit.
  •         You’re already using a matching bath range: Mustela keeps your routine consistent.
  •         Budget is the main factor and skin is unproblematic: Johnson’s Baby is a safe, affordable choice.

Whichever lotion you choose, always patch-test on a small area of skin first and wait 24 hours before applying it more widely, especially in the newborn period when skin is at its most delicate.

The Bottom Line

There’s no single “best” baby lotion for every family — there’s a best lotion for your baby’s specific skin. Aveeno earns its reputation for a reason, particularly for babies prone to dryness or eczema, but it isn’t automatically superior to every alternative on the shelf. Take a look at your baby’s skin, note any sensitivities, and match the formula to what you’re actually dealing with.

The “Best” baby lotion is going to be determined by your baby’s individual skin type. While Aveeno does earn its name as one of the most well-known brands for babies that suffer from dryness and/or eczema, it doesn’t mean that it will be better than all other options available to you. Look at your baby’s skin (and any sensitivities) and choose a formula based on what they have.
